Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (NRI Day)

To recognise the Overseas Indian community’s contribution to India’s development, Non-Resident Indian day (NRI DAY) is observed on January 9. The greatest Pravasi, Mahatma Gandhi, arrived in India from South Africa in 1915. He contributed significantly to India’s struggle for independence and forever altered Indian culture.

The celebration of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas honours the contribution of the Indian community living abroad to the advancement of India. To honour this day, a PBD convention is planned.

The government also bestows the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award on this day. It is the highest honour given to a non-resident Indian, a person of Indian descent, or an organisation or institution founded and operated by non-resident Indians or people of Indian descent who have significantly contributed to improving comprehension of India abroad, supporting India’s causes and concerns in a meaningful manner, community work abroad, wellbeing of the local Indian community, and philanthropic and charitable work.
