What is Female Genital Mutilation?

Female Genital Mutilation is now a violent, invasive situation where external female genitalia is partially or removed. Now, so many countries show there zero tolerance for this practice.

It is made illegal now in so many countries. Female genital mutilation undergoes methods that include altering or hurting the female genitalia for non-medical reasons.

It is seen in all countries and recognized as a violation of human rights. The health and integrity of many girls and women are compromised here.

Effects of Female Genital Mutilation:

Severe pain, shocks, infections in many body parts, excessive bleeding, and passing urine becomes so difficult this girl has to undergo who has faced.

In this procedure, girls have to face many sexual and reproductive health issues physically and mentally. About 30 countries have raised their voice against this violence in Africa and the Middle East now it has become a universal problem.

Some immigrant countries like Europe, North America, and New Zealand still face this Female Genital Mutilation. People who face FGM survivors and practitioners now advocate working to eradicate the process in our community;

Priscilla Nanagiro is among 60 community activists who were fighting with UN Women Associations to drive out the practice of FGM in rural communities. This eradication program follows a “SASA!” – a comprehensive model that has successfully changed harmful social norms through community engagement worldwide, particularly in Africa.

The eradication programs inspire to raise awareness and also encourage standing against such practices.

Different Programs conducted to Eradicate Female Genital Mutilation:

Voices of Resilience program features so many girls to show the success achieved over past decades in the global fight to stop FGM.

This program organized by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). In 2023, the UNFPA and UNICEF joined their programs, and the combined program features the elimination of FGM.

In 2022, the theme was “Accelerating Investment to End Female Genital Mutilation.” In theme, the association delivered the Global Promise as there was a great crisis due to the pandemic the female genital mutilation has increased for money.

“February 6”: As the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation.

For this reason, the United Nations calls on the global community to promise to reimagine a world that enables girls to raise their voices and choice and control their own lives.

People need to participate in the programs conducted by the associations of different countries and try to participate in the online podcasts on social media and share the slogan “InvestDontRest.”

The UN General Assembly organizes February 6 as the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation. This has celebrated since 2012.

The motto of this day to raise a voice against such practices and aimed to put an end to this practice by 2030. Recent reports show how many women and girls affected by FGM.

About 120 to 140 million women subjected to FGM worldwide. Every year at least 3 million girls at risk, and this the record presented by the World Health Organization (WHO).

These reports published to make people aware of the horror situation going on in society. The WHO says, “Though the practices have persisted for over a thousand years, programs evidence suggests that FGM needs to end in one generation.

These situations of the world brought a movement for the right of women and their bodies and the protection of their physical and mental health, which is affecting them.

All these acts conducted to fight against violence against women and girls. The International day for FGM has not  declared a public holiday.

On Zero Tolerance Day, February 6, 2015, it reported by Equality Now that “the White House, the Department of Justice, the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues, and the USCIS all issued statements condemning FGM from practiced.
